STAR KIT: Berghaus jacket HAS LASTED: 12 years

My Berghaus waterproof celebrated its 12th birthday this year. I’m not much of a one for shiny new gear, but I never expected this hot pink hunk of Gore-Tex – a freebie that landed on my desk in 2010 – to be keeping out the elements more than a decade later.

If that jacket could talk, it would have some gnarly stories to tell. It’s kept me dry on waterlogged multi-day Lake District wild camps, snowy Scottish winter days and changeable

Snowdonian scrambles. It’s walked up mountains in the Sri Lankan rainy season and in the Alps during summer storms. I must have washed and reproofed it dozens of times, but only recently has it begun to show a few signs of wear and tear.

When I’m finally forced to send my ancient pink friend to Rehaused for recycling and start the search for a new one, my priority will by durability: I want another jacket that lasts for a decade.
