The Great Outdoors (UK)

An article that sparked a life-changing transformation

-

Back in January 2019, The Great Outdoors published an online article (Interview: Harrison Ward, the ‘Fell Foodie’, on how

the mountains transformed his life) about my struggle to overcome alcoholism. To cut a long story short, I used to be vastly overweight, a smoker and an alcoholic, suffering from poor mental health and suicidal thoughts; but walking up (and cooking in) the mountains of the Lake District helped me conquer my demons.

The article by TGO was the very first time I’d been featured in the mainstream media and, as I look back now, it was another watershed moment in life. Ever since that article, I’ve had a crazy few years jampacked with opportunities to share my story far and wide, including appearing on primetime BBC2 cooking for national treasure Mary Berry. I’ve also been lucky enough to talk at Keswick and Kendal Mountain Festivals, and grown a loyal social media following interested in my hiking exploits and summit cooking recipes.

And this January I’ve taken the next step in this scary but incredible journey. I’ve been able to leave my 9-to-5 job and begin working as a full-time freelancer, earning a living as a mental health advocate, mountain cook and keynote speaker. It’s a dream come true. Thank you to the team at TGO for giving me a little helping hand along the way.
