Can you still enjoy a long-distance walk in winter? James Forrest and Nicola Hardy posed this question in their article Highs and Lows, after completing a five-day,

90-mile hike of the Dales High Way in rather atrocious wintry conditions.

Here are some TGO readers’ responses: Sam (@walking_with_sam, Instagram):

“Yes! I’ve walked the West Highland Way in November. It was cold with snow and ice, but the biggest issue I had was running out of daylight by late afternoon.”

Al (@the_red_hill_of_dreams, Instagram):

“Yes – I did the West Highland Way during the first week of January this year. I had one day of trudging 20 miles through 6-inch-deep snow!”

Rudgie (@lost_boy_explores, Instagram):

“Probably not solo, but I’d love to if I could find someone daft enough to do one alongside me.” Juls (@over_stepping, Instagram): “I did the Wales Coast Path this winter from December 1 to February 7. I got myself in a funk and a pickle halfway through, and Nic [Nicola Hardy] was a mensch with her encouraging messages. It was grand, but I’ll definitely be happy to hike in long days and sunshine again.”
