Welfare of the wild

- Stew Hume

Like many who love the outdoors, recent rambles – especially during the summer’s few heatwaves here in the UK – have left me more and more concerned for the welfare of our wild spaces.

Even from my little walks with the dog in our local area, I have become concerned over the lack of respect for our green places. I was heartbroken to read Hanna Lindon’s documentation of how mountaineering is becoming more dangerous, and at times fatal, due to melting permafrost directly linked to climate change. Meanwhile, Matt Staniek’s comment on his campaign to stop sewage being dumped in Windermere left me feeling hopeful about how grassroots action can create change for the better. Many thanks to The Great Outdoors for continuing to shine a light on these issues, both far-flung and close to home.
