When Richard Taylor tweeted The Great Outdoors saying he’d visited Shenavall bothy for the first time in 18 years “and nothing had changed in this stunning, atmospheric location”, we wanted to hear more. Here, Richard shares a snippet of his journey to one of Scotland's most beloved bothies.

It was the recognisable smoky, peaty smell that first caught my attention as we approached Shenavall bothy under the mass of An Teallach. We couldn’t see it yet but knew it was near. The route we had just walked across rough track and open moorland was also still familiar from my first trip here 18 years ago. That time we had planned to do a full round of the Fisherfield 6 a couple of weeks before heading out on a trip to the Himalayas. We never completed the full round then, so this time we were back to enjoy a big day on Ruadh Stac Mor and A’ Mhaighdean. Bothy trips are as memorable as they are practical. A staging post for big days but also for creating fond memories in our most wild and esoteric locations.
