NAVIGATION ESSENTIALS

MAPS, LAMINATED OR IN WATERPROOF CASE

Consider cutting down your map to a more manageable size, or printing out and laminating areas of digital mapping. Always pack a spare. Don’t forget to wear a watch for accurate timing.

COMPASS

Choose one with a big baseplate and magnifier, an easy-to-turn housing and luminous needle. Again, carry a spare compass. Don’t store them next to magnetic items in your pack.

MOBILE PHONE

Plus charger or power brick. Keep it somewhere warm, such as close to your body, and activate Airplane Mode (until you need to use it) to save battery life. Also carry a whistle to call for help.
