Up to 85% of mothers nat­u­rally tend to carry their baby on their left side. Re­searchers found that wal­ruses and fly­ing foxes also favour cradling their in­fants on the left, sug­gest­ing it is an evo­lu­tion­ary aid to bonding. The re­search also found that, when sep­a­rated from its mother, an in­fant au­to­mat­i­cally po­si­tioned it­self to re­main on the left of her vis­ual field
