• In re­gard to We tore the cover off an Amer­i­can city by Do­rian Lynskey (30 March): thanks for the at­ten­tion to The Wire TV se­ries. My wife and I watched this se­ries fully twice. It changed my think­ing about many as­pects of the US. It felt un­com­monly hon­est – both in its sto­ries and its char­ac­ters.

The only other tele­vi­sion se­ries of sim­i­lar power and depth that I re­call is Up­stairs, Down­stairs from the BBC in the 1970s. Quite dif­fer­ent in many ways from The Wire, yet for me it shared that cur­rent of hon­esty, and changed my world­view. Helge R Berg New­berg, Ore­gon, US
