A man who took part in a chilli pep­per eat­ing con­test ended up with more than he bar­gained for. Af­ter eat­ing a Carolina Reaper pep­per, the 34-year-old dry heaved be­fore de­vel­op­ing a pain in his neck that turned into thun­der­clap headaches. The Carolina Reaper can reach 2.2m on the Scov­ille heat scale, and was the world’s hottest pep­per at the time of the 2016 in­ci­dent. As a com­par­i­son, jalapeño pep­pers mea­sure 2,500-20,000 on the scale. BMJ Case Re­ports re­veal the pain caused the man to go the emer­gency room at Bas­sett Med­i­cal Cen­ter in Coop­er­stown, New York.
