Nobel winner seeks presidency


GUATEMALA CITY: Rigoberta Menchu, a Guatemalan Maya Indian who won the Nobel peace prize in 1992, is seeking to become Latin America’s first indigenous woman head of state in September elections.

Menchu, a defender of Mayan victims during the 36-year civil war in which her parents and brotherwer­e killed, is backed by a left-wing party andWinaq, a new coalition of indigenous leaders.

“We want to give hope to young people and women . . . who have waited a long time for a chance to participat­e,” she said.
