Residents and staff flee fire at Royal Mint
STAFF were evacuated from the Royal Mint in South Wales yesterday after a serious fire broke out.
Residents near the site at Llantrisant and those in neighbouring villages were urged by South Wales Police to stay inside and keep windows and doors closed.
The warning was issued after the blaze started at 3.45pm because chemicals used at the Royal Mint could irritate the eyes, nose and throat if they were carried in the smoke.
A South Wales Police spokeswoman said: “Police officers have cordoned off the scene and are assisting fire officers.
“The cause of the fire is not yet known. No casualties have been reported. Residents are urged to remain calm and follow advice from the emergency services.”
A Royal Mint spokesman confirmed that a blaze had taken place, but added that all the staff at Llantrisant had been accounted for.
