Follower of giant teapot cult refuses to repent

A FOLLOWER of a bizarre cult based on a giant teapot was jailed yesterday for declaring herself apostate.

An Islamic court in Terengganu state gave Kamariah Ali, 57, a former teacher and Muslim, a two-year sentence after she refused to repent.

“What she did was not with- in the concept of freedom of religion,” said the judge. Apostasy is an offence in Malaysia.

Kamariah, a widow with four children, was arrested in 2005 along with 57 other followers of the cult.

The outlawed sect, headed by a man who says he is God and owner of everything, believes the teapot has healing properties.–Reuters
