Man sent to prison over fatal collision

-

A DRIVER who caused a fatal four car pile-up by falling asleep at the wheel has been jailed for 52 months.

Sales consultant James Moran, 60, was over the legal alcohol limit when his Mercedes Vito brought chaos to the A876 near the Clackmannanshire Bridge.

He had driven through the night from Manchester after a charity golf event.

Father- o f - t wo Peter Harper, 44, died of his injuries, after he wastrapped in his Vauxhall Astra.

Jailing Moran at the High Court in Edinburgh, judge Lord Turnbull said the jail term was not meant to measure the Harpers’ loss.

Moran, of Clackmannanshire, pled guilty to causing death by dangerous driving on August 5 last year.

MrHarper had been going to work in Broxburn with Marshall Construction.

Advocate depute Kath Harper, prosecuting, said Moran – a father-of-two – left his Menstrie home at 6am on August 4, 2011, for a charity golf day with friend James Marshall.

After a day of golf that finished at 6pm Moran went to a dinner, where wine was served. Moran drank in the bar while Mr Marshall went to his room. Moran woke Mr Marshall up and asked him if he wanted to go home.

Moran d r o p p e d Mr Marshall off at his home in Armadale, West Lothian, and started the journey to Menstrie, 30 miles away.

Driver John Copeland, 43, told police Moran had his head on his chest as he strayed into the southbound lane into the path of three on-coming vehicles.
