Swinton’s Bowie role is an oddity

- PHIL MILLER

OSCAR-WINNING actress Tilda Swinton stars in the new video released by rock and pop star David Bowie.

Bowie, who is making a comeback after years out of the limelight, has released a new promotional film for his latest single starring Swinton, who lives in Nairn, as his fictional wife.

It is the second offering from his latest album The Next Day – the star’s first collection of new material for a decade – which is to be released next month.

The video for the track The Stars (Are Out Tonight), also features Norwegian model Iselin Steiro who is seen dressed as Bowie in the late 1970s look he adopted for his Low album sleeve.

In the film, Bowie and Swinton appear as a comfortable, staid married couple living in California whose lives are transformed by a pair of androgynous figures, played by models Andrej Pejic and Saskia De Brauw.

The actress – who won the best supporting actress Oscar in 2007 for her role in Michael Clayton – is seen shopping and watching TV.

The video – presented as a short film – was directed by Canadian filmmaker Floria Sigismondi, who worked with Bowie on Little Wonder in 1996 and Dead Man Walking in 1997.

Bowie surprised the music world by announcing his comeback on his 66th birthday last month after years of withdrawing from the spotlight.

His new single is more uptempo than the ballad Where Are We Now? that he released in January.
