Cheap egg is top of the chocs

A £5 supermarke­t Easter egg has beaten luxury rivals costing up to £70 in an annual taste test.

The Chokablok American Dreamcake egg sold at Tesco scored 84 out of 100 to take the title of Good Housekeepi­ng Easter Egg of the Year.

Among its competitor­s were Hotel Chocolat Half and Half Ostrich Easter Egg, priced £70, which got 80 out of 100 and the Harrods Chocolate Brownie and Raspberry Egg, priced £24.95, which got 70 out of 100.

Tasters sampled 193 chocolate eggs to decide winners in four categories. Marks and Spencer’s £6 Colin the Caterpilla­r won the children’s category and Lindt’s Heavenly Hazelnut Milk egg £19.99 took the adults.

M&S won the sharing category with five topped eggs for £10.
