Station reopens after delay to £11m rebuild

-

TRAINS are using a railway station in Glasgow’s East End again after a six-month delay to its £11 million upgrade.

Services to and from Dalmarnockarerunningagain after groundwork problems held up its upgrade.

The new-look station is expected to be used by thousands of spectators going to badminton and cycling events at the 2014 Commonwealth Games at the nearby Emirates Arena and Chris Hoy Velodrome.

The station was shut down last June so it could be rebuilt.

When the work is finished it will have a new station building and lifts to both platforms, plus a new pedestrian footbridge, platform surfaces, wall cladding and customer information and communication systems.

Trains had been due to

Sir resume services in November but major problems over groundworks led to a sixmonth hold-up and the opening of the new building was put off until yesterday.

Until the entire upgrade is completed later this year, passengers heading for Glasgow Central will have to use a temporary staircase in Swanston Street to get on to the platform.

Dalmarnock has almost 80,000 passengers a year, and the station has been billed as a gateway to the Commonwealth Games.

ANetwork Rail spokesman said: “The new station will be a real landmark for the area and provide an impressive welcome for those arriving at the station especially during the 2014 Commonwealth Games.”

He said the upgrade will be finished this winter.
