Gartnavel Hospital praised in report
A SCOTTISH health authority has been praised by the Healthcare Environment Inspectorate (HEI) following an unannounced inspection.
Gartnavel General Hospital, run by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, was said by the HEI to have “good awareness” of infection control.
However, watchdogs uncovered four areas of improvement, including providing additional information on hospital acquired infections, having adequate numbers of cleaning staff and more regular collection of sharps bins.
It was also recommended that staff keep clearer documentation of disposal of peripheral vascular catheters.
The HEI visited Gartnavel on March 26 and toured wards to assess their cleanliness and ascertain whether the hospital complies with national standards.
Susan Brimelow, HEI Chief Inspector, said: “This was a good inspection and we found that NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is complying with most standards to protect patients, staff and visitors from the risk of infection.
“We found that there was good awareness of infection prevention and control roles and responsibilities.
“However, we also identified areas for improvement including one outstanding requirement from a previous inspection that staff must consistently complete peripheral vascular catheter documentation.
“We expect two of the requirements to be addressed as a matter of urgency.”
It was recommended that infection information for MRSA and C.diff is available and that collection of sharps bins takes place regularly.
