25 YEARS AGO

FALKIRK fans are planning to go into the transfer business by splashing out cash of their own to try and buy back midfield man Kevin McAllister from Chelsea. The campaign is the brainchild of local newspaper sports editor Paul New, who hopes to raise £100,000. McAllister was on loan to the Brockville club for the last six matches of the season, and although his presence failed to help Falkirk avoid relegation, fan power may see he returns on a more permanent basis.

50 YEARS AGO

GLASGOW Corporatio­n officials are awaiting the results of a scientific analysis of Birmingham’s dipped headlights experiment before deciding whether to undertake a similar campaign. The results of this analysis are not likely to be known until midsummer. Mr George Kerr, Glasgow’s road safety officer, said last night: “It is possible the reduction in accidents during the experiment resulted from dipped headlights making up a deficiency in street lighting.”

100 YEARS AGO

THE first steps towards the developmen­t of Ardgoil estate were taken when the Corporatio­n of Glasgow inaugurate­d a scheme of aforrestat­ion on the western slopes of the mountain park presented to the city seven years ago by Lord Rowallan. Since the gift was conveyed considerat­ion has been devoted as to how the estate might best be utilised and developed for behoof of the citizens.
