Police charge 950 in driving crackdown
ALMOST 950 of fences, including a motorcyclist speeding at 126mph, were detected in a three-day road safety crackdown.
Offenders received a fine or had their vehicle seized in the nationwide campaign between 7am on Friday and 7am on Monday. Some drivers face court over offences.
Over the weekend, 629 road users were caught speeding, 47 drivers found to be driving dangerously or carelessly, 139 driving without insurance or a valid licence and 129 people driving vehicles needing repairs.
Police had a focus on motorbikes in the campaign and of those caught speeding, 39 were bikers.
A 46-year-old motorcyclist was stopped in Stirling for speeding and was found to have no licence and was also over the drink-driving limit. In Girvan, Ayrshire, one biker was clocked by a speed camera at 126mph.
A 19-year-old man in Aberdeenshire was caught riding an unregistered moped with no insurance while carrying a 13-year-old passenger. Neither had a helmet on.
Inspector Ian Paul, head of the Police Scotland Motorcycle Trunk Road Patrol Group, said: “Throughout the summer months we would ask all road users to remember all vulnerable groups, including motorcyclists, slow-moving vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, and continue to ask yourself ‘what is around the corner?’ Expect the unexpected.”
