Mother’s grief as body is found
Remains of man who vanished 14 years ago discovered in wood
THE mother of a young man whose body has been found 14 years after he went missing has said she will miss him every day for the rest of her life.
Colin Law was 19 when he vanished in May 1999.
His disappearance sparked a police search of the countryside around his home in Gordon, Berwickshire lasting two years.
Adog walker discovered human remains last month and police have now confirmed the body was that of Mr Law.
His mother, who does not wish to be named, issued a short statement through Police Scotland in which she said she would miss her son “every day for the rest of my life”.
Despite speculation at the time of his disappearance, police now say there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.
Police launched huge searches for Mr Law, including one on the second anniversary of him going missing.
At the time, criminal activity was not ruled out as the reason for his disappearance.
Specialist police dogs were called in to assist the search, after a report of Mr Law entering Gordon Moss alone and on foot.
The boggy terrain meant police were up to their waists in water at times.
But the searches, which covered 110 acres of marshes and dense woodland, ended with no trace of Mr Law.
A further search later took place in a strip of woodland between Gordon and Earlston.
It was only on April 21 this year that his body was discovered in a wooded area near Gordon.
Mid Berwickshire Councillor Frances Renton, said: “Obviously, from a family point of view the fact that the body has been identified will mean that they can now put him to rest.
“Tribute must be paid to the police for all their hard work.
“It has been a long time since Colin went missing and it gives the family peace of mind and the ability to let him rest in peace.”
John Greenhill, another councillor for the Mid Berwickshire area, said he was very pleased that the family now had closure.
He said: “This happened before I moved into the area, but I am very pleased for the family. They now have closure for something that went on for a very, very long time.”
