Labour plan for discount at gyms for troops

- KATE DEVLIN UK POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT

THOUSANDS of soldiers are to be offered discounted gym memberships under a scheme devised by Labour.

The party says many servicemen and women do not have access to health and fitness facilities when they are away from their base.

Called Fighting Fitter the scheme offers discounts at more than 450 health and leisure sites across the UK and Labour is encouraging councils to get involved.

Yesterday the party also introduced a Bill designed to prevent discrimination against the Armed Forces and ensure certain offences against them are treated as aggravated.

Labour says the moves are all part of a drive to ensure those who fight for the UK are treated with the respect they deserve,

The party has already secured employment support for veterans as well as Veterans’ Champions to help them cope with civilian life.

Groups signed up to the scheme include Pure Gym, Virgin Active, Nuffield Health and David Lloyd.

The campaign has also received cross-party backing, with the support of former Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell and James Arbuthnot, the Conservative Party chairman of t he Commons Defence Select Committee.

Jim Murphy, Labour’s shadow defence secretary, said: “Fighting Fitter will benefit those who serve in the dust and danger of battlefields overseas.

“It is essential all parts of our communities at home give to those who give so much on the frontline.”

Sir Menzies said: “Our servicemen and women deserve nothing but the best. With an increasing emphasis on good health, access to a gymnasium can make a real difference to people’s lives.”
