Stars out to watch centre court victory

- DAVID MERCER

STARS including Benedict Cumberbatch, Bradley Cooper and Hugh Grant were in the Royal Box on Centre Court alongside a host of former Wimbledon champions for yesterday’s final, won by Novak Djokovic.

Sherlock star Cumberbatch, 38, was joined by his father Timothy, while 54-year-old Grant sat with TV executive Anna Eberstein, the mother of one of his three children.

They watched as Djokovic beat Roger Federer.

Former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, Italian football World Cup winner Alessandro Del Piero, Commons Speaker John Bercow – who sported a Federer cap – Helena Bonham Carter and Kristin Scott Thomas, Kate Winslet, actor Clive Owen and Vogue fashion magazine editor Anna Wintour were also watching on Centre Court.

But Formula One’s Lewis Hamilton was barred after he breached the strict dress code.

A spokesman for the two-time champion said: “Due to an unfortunate misunderstanding regarding dress code at Wimbledon, Lewis is very disappointed to have missed the men’s final.”

Earlier, the double world champion had posted a picture on social media showing his Royal Box invitation package.

Tennis legends Bjorn Borg, Chrissie Evert and Rod Laver were present in the Royal Box.

It was Djokovic’s third Wimbledon title. He screamed in delight and pumped his arms after winning, before eating some of the Centre Court grass.
