Mountain searches for two missing walkers
MOUNTAIN rescue teams have spent the weekend scouring an area of the Highlands where two men disappeared alone in separate incidents.
Lochaber Mou nt ai n Rescue Team have stepped up efforts to find Tom Brown, 65, from Lanark, after tourists came across his abandoned rucksack.
Meanwhile, searches have also been taking place for Eric Cyl, 62, who disappeared six weeks ago after making the trip north from his home in England. A police helicopter joined the mountain rescuers and search dogs were also involved.
Oban, Appin, Fort William and Mallaig coastguard teams scoured rivers and streams on Saturday. Police divers are preparing to search the River Ness this week.
The search has been concentrated in the eastern part of the Steall meadows after the rucksack belonging to Mr Brown was found close to the river. The man stayed at Glen Nevis Youth Hostel last Thursday.
“It is quite a mystery,” said John Stevenson, Lochaber MRT leader.
Last month, a major search failed to find experienced hillwalker Kilmarnock-born Mr Cyl after he was reported missing after heading for a trip in the same area.
More than 60 rescuers took part in the main operation to try to find Mr Cyl, 62, who was believed to be in the Steall, Glen Nevis, Grey Corries, Aonach Beag or Mamores area.
Mr Cyl was last seen heading off into the Mamore mountain range near Fort William on May 30.
He was last seen wearing a light grey jacket and dark trousers and was carrying two walking poles.
