Shock as car struck by bottle thrown off bridge

TWO health care workers were showered with wine and glass after a bottle was dropped from a footbridge on to their passing car in an act which police say could have ended in a tragedy.

The women were travelling on the A89, to the east of Pumpherston Road, Broxburn, West Lothian, at around 8.20pm on Saturday.

As they passed under the bridge, a man on the walkway above dropped a bottle, believed to contain wine, on to the car.

The bottle then smashed the windscreen of the white Ford Fiesta and showered the two occupants with wine and shards of glass.

Sergeant Darren Cook, of Police Scotland at Linlithgow, said: “This was an incredible act of stupidity which could have had catastrophic consequences. The two female occupants of the car escaped serious injury, although the passenger did receive minor cuts to her hands and arms. This could have ended in a tragedy.”

The man who dropped the bottle was part of a larger group of people walking on the footbridge. Police are now seeking the public’s help to identify those in the group.

Mr Cook added: “We are keen to trace this group of people who were on the pedestrian bridge and were walking from the Broxburn side of the bridge to the Uphall Station side.

“They are only described as being in their late teens/early twenties, and the one who dropped the bottle was a male. No further descriptions are available at this time.

“The group made off towards Uphall Station when the car stopped.

“I would ask anyone who can help identify this group to call us on 101.”
