Independence cuts both ways
IT WAS interesting to note the fulsome praise accorded outgoing Scottish Police Authority (SPA) chairman Vic Emery by Scottish Police Chief Sir Stephen House (Police watchdog chief next to go, The Herald, July 9). It was only some two years ago both were at loggerheads as to the specified remit of their respective duties. Harmonious working relationships and respect are good foundations in any organisation.
However, Police Scotland and the SPA are two separate entities. Any perceived overly close or cosy arrangements would demean either and certainly would not benefit the Scottish public.
As an example, the disclosure that someone with declared political ambitions is tipped to replace Mr Emery does nothing to instil confidence in the independence of the SPA from political bias.
Independence has been the watchword of many over this past decade. It is essential that those who politically preach independence should ensure unfettered independence applies when further major public appointments such as SPA chairman and Police Scotland Chief Constable take place.
