Lead stripped from £2m revamp school

-

A PRIMARY school which has undergone a £2 million revamp faces a crippling repair bill after vandals stripped lead off its new roof.

Police investigating the incident at Kings Park Primary in the south side of Glasgow believe thieves will only get around £50 for the stolen lead.

But at the same time, heavy rain has caused water damage to the roof, classrooms, offices and corridors, which will cost thousands to repair.

Kings Park Primary is one of the city schools to undergo a £2m facelift as part of the council’s £130m 4Rs school refurbishment strategy that has seen major investment in the nurseries and schools.

Three schools, including Annette Street and Croftfoot primaries, have been targeted by lead thieves in the last few weeks.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “We can confirm that we have received a report of lead being stolen from Kings Park Primary and an investigation is under way.”

The theft was reported on Monday and a major mopping up operation was put in place.

There are now fears more schools could be targeted and an appeal has been made for people to be vigilant if they live near to a school.

A council spokeswoman said: “We want to appeal to the local community to be vigilant over the summer holidays and report anything strange in empty school buildings to the local police.

“It is disheartening to see the schools being vandalised in this way when the council is spending so much money to enhance the primary school estate.
