Fundraisers join celebrities to help Sport Relief top £59m
PEOPLE of all ages and abilities joined in the fun and activities on Glasgow Green for the Sport Relief Games, helping the overall fundraising total reach more than £56.9 million.
Broadcaster Fred MacAulay helped kick off the first activities, which saw cyclists take in a route that skirted the River Clyde towards the east end and city centre.
Fundraisers also took the plunge at an indoor pool in the Gorbals, while runners and walkers pounded the pavements, clocking up hundreds of miles.
In one of the more unusual efforts, staff at Edinburgh estate agency DJ Alexander crammed 14 of their number into a Mini Cooper, achieving half the current world record of 28.
They have raised almost £1,000 in sponsorship.
Michelle McMenamin, whose family took part in the one-mile event, said: “We love doing things as a family. Sport Relief is great because we do it for a good cause and we get to contribute to something at the same time!”
The crowds were entertained throughout the day, with performances from acts including The Strathclyde Warriors cheerleading squad and Rock Choir Glasgow – and many more.
Money raised through Sport Relief will be spent helping people living tough lives in Scotland, across the UK and in the world’s poorest communities.
Meanwhile, comedian Eddie Izzard completed his Sport Relief challenge, which saw him run 27 marathons in 27 days – over 700 miles – across South Africa, including a double marathon on his final day. The feat raised more than £1.35m.
