Dell in pledge to continue business growth

- VICTORIA MASTERSON DEPUTY BUSINESS EDITOR

COMPUTER systems and support group Dell has pledged to continue growing its businesses in Scotland.

Tim Griffin, head of the Texas group’s UK operations, said growing demand for off-site data storage and security services would underpin growth at its Glasgow and Edinburgh sites, which service customers including the universities of Aberdeen, St Andrews and Edinburgh.

“In terms of our business in Scotland, we’ve got a very strong public [sector] client base and continue to grow our footprint there as and when the market grows,” said Mr Griffin, who is vice president and general manager for Dell UK.

The company employs about 600 people in Glasgow across teams in sales and remote services – where specialists provide phone and internet-based support to clients on technology topics. Dell employs another 100 people in Edinburgh at its SecureWorks business, which uses remote monitoring to protect organisations from internet threats.

“These are pervasive threats by what we call bad actors,” Mr Griffin said. “That could be someone looking at hacking into a customer’s infrastructure from their bedroom, to corporations or government agencies getting involved in industrial espionage.

“We continue to invest. Last year we took on a number of graduates both on the remote services and sales sides, and will continue to do that.” Both Glasgow and Edinburgh would continue to scale, he said.
