Pensioner killed in crash at accident hot-spot

-

AN ELDERLY motorcyclist has died in a crash involving three vehicles near Loch Ness.

The man, 73, died from injuries sustained in the crash on the A82 at Borlum Farm, Lewiston, near Drumnadrochit, at about 4.20pm on Saturday. His family has been informed and police are appealing for witnesses.

The man has not yet been named by police.

The fatal crash is the latest in a string of collisions on the scenic route, which links Glasgow and Inverness via Fort William.

In August last year, 86-yearold motorcyclist Ewen Haldane, from Greenock, was killed on the A82 five miles north of Luss, in Argyll & Bute, when his bike was involved in a collision with two cars at about 11.05am.

Emergency services rushed to the scene but were unable to save Mr Haldane, a veteran motorcyclist rider who had competed in in 15 Isle of Man TT events.

Mr Haldane’s death came just two weeks after another motorcycling tragedy on the route when 44-year-old bike enthusiast, Colin Cameron, from Renfrew, struck a transit van on the A82 near Inverbeg.

And in 2010, 35-year-old motorcycle instructor Matt Campbell, from Inverness, was killed in a crash on the A82 near Drumnadrochit, where the latest fatal crash occurred.

Motorcyclists are among the most vulnerable of road users. They make up just one per cent of traffic but account for about 13 per cent of total fatalities, with 30 motorcyclists killed in Scotland in 2014.

Male riders aged 40 to 49 are statistically the most likely to be killed or seriously injured.
