Plaid leader hits out at PM over referendum timing

-

PLAID Cymru’s Leanne Wood has launched a stinging attack on David Cameron for the timing of the EU referendum.

People in Wales have been back at the ballot box a little over a month after voting in the Welsh Assembly elections in May.

Plaid chief Ms Wood said that the two polls being so close to one another had made the Remain campaign less effective.

She said: “We warned the Prime Minister very early on that the date was too close to the Welsh and Scottish elections and that it would cause problems. In Wales we saw the election of a large number of Ukip AMs with all of this as background noise.

“If the result ends up being leave for Wales, it exonerates our position on the issue of timing.”

Remain advocate Ms Wood also described the battle between the two camps as “on a knife edge” – and said she was not surprised despite parts of Wales receiving large funding from the EU.

She added: “It looks as if the areas where there are greater levels of deprivation and received the most of European Union funding are the areas most likely to have the greatest numbers of those wanting to leave.

“That tells me people are not satisfied with the status quo and that the status quo cannot prevail.

“I’m not surprised at all. In the Rhondda where I stood and won in the Assembly election, there was very strong feeling from people that they want change.”
