Stabbing incident disrupts voting

-

A POLLING station was temporarily closed after a man was stabbed nearby.

The man was found collapsed with a stab wound in the Waverley Road area of Huddersfield, in West Yorkshire, at 5.15pm yesterday.

West Yorkshire Police said the polling station on the same road was closed for half an hour to contain the crime scene but the stabbing was not linked to the EU referendum.

A force spokesman said the victim is believed to have suffered serious, but not life-threatening, injuries. A 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

The police spokesman said the attack was unrelated to the crucial Europe ballot.

“This incident is not linked to the European referendum.

“It is believed the incident took place in Greenhead Park and the victim has then walked to the Waverley Road area.

“The polling station was closed for half-an-hour to contain a crime scene but is now open again.”

Kirklees Council later announced that the polling station had reopened through Twitter.

It advised anyone who could not vote in the 30-minute closure can return up to 10pm.

A witness said that three men had come to the aid of the victim until the emergency services arrived.
