25 YEARS AGO The Prime Minister is to go to Moscow later this year on behalf of the world’s richest nations to supervise the freeing of the Soviet economy, which is now to have the help of the western world’s financial expertise. President Gorbachev and Mr Major announced this surprise development in a day of breakthroughs at the London summit. Both leaders, together at a news conference last night, described it as a “very successful and historic meeting.” 50 YEARS AGO Day trippers followed hard on the heels of holidaymakers in the traditional mass evacuation of Glasgow over the Fair weekend. Sunnier weather, with fewer attractions in the city, made roads even busier yesterday than on Saturday. By early afternoon about 7000 cars an hour were heading out of Glasgow. The busiest routes were the A82 Glasgow-Loch Lomond road and the A77 Glasgow –Ayr Road. 100 YEARS AGO The programme at La Scala Photo Playhouse this week is well selected and of varied interest. The outstanding item is a drama entitled “The Island of Regeneration,” an adaptation of the novel by the Rev. Cyrus Townsend Brady. The story is strong in dramatic incident. Two comedies, “Gay Blade’s Last Scrape” and “She Came, She Saw, She Conquered,” are also included. An official war film illustrates the mounting of a naval gun on land. 150 YEARS AGO Accounts of the state of the crops from all parts of the Irish provinces are most promising. There is a much larger breadth than has been the case of late years under the potato, and the appearance of the fields is excellent. The hay crop is being rapidly and successfully saved. The cereals also are unusually rich and strong. Out of 53 reports of cattle disease sent to the Irish Government within the last few days not one has proved a fresh case of rinderpest.
