NEW series. Reality programme filmed over the course of a year in which 23 men and women try to build a new life from scratch in a “remote” – by TV producers’ standards – location in the Highlands, with participants including a doctor, a vet, a chef, a carpenter and a shepherdess.

Tonight, they tackle the start of their 365-day experience as they open the gates into the 600 acres of land they will be calling home for the next 12 months, trekking through dense woodland to find one another and begin to build homes.

THE SOMME 1916 - FROM BOTH SIDES OF THE WIRE BBC2, 9pM

WHEN it comes to informing and educating generations of one of the bloodiest conflicts of the 20th century, this new series does a good job.

Peter Barton is our guide, and he will be examining events of the First World War battle from German and British perspectives. While much of the received wisdom may tell us one thing, Barton reveals a story that gives us a fresh take on those horrific events of 100 years ago when 420,000 Britons alone lost their lives, and half a million Germans perished between July and November 1916.
