Scotland sizzles but storms set to bring disruption
HAIL, flash floods and thunderstorms are set to bring mid-summer misery to parts of Scotland later today, forecasters have warned.
Torrential rain is expected to shatter the summer heat from 5pm onwards, with the Met Office issuing a severe weather warning for the whole of Scotland and parts of England advising people of possible disruption to travel, flooding of homes and businesses, and power cuts.
It comes at the end of what is predicted to be the UK’s hottest day of the year so far, with the mercury tipped to hit 33C in some parts of England, while the west of Scotland will bask in the best of the sunshine north of the Border with expected highs of around 28C in the Glasgow area.
The rest of the country is also set to enjoy fine, dry weather and temperatures in the low to mid-20s.
However, the heat and humidity looks set to give way to thunderstorms from the evening rush-hour onwards, with the Met Office yellow weather warning in place from 5pm tonight until 6pm tomorrow.
Forecasters believe more than two inches of rain could fall in an hour in places affected but say the individual areas which storms will hit are “hard to predict”.
Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge said: “The whole of the area that is covered by the warning can anticipate some thundery outbreaks.
“Downpours, where they do occur, could be quite heavy and we believe we could see rain of up to 30mm or so in an hour.”
