VC war hero’s baby girl may carry Queen’s name

-

A WAR hero who was presented with the Victoria Cross by the Queen has revealed he is considering naming his latest child after the monarch.

Johnson Beharry was awarded the VC in 2005 for bravery on the battlefield in Iraq, making him the first living recipient of the military’s highest honour in almost 40 years.

His actions left him with serious injuries, resulting in the loss of part of his brain.

Four years after receiving the VC from the Queen, Mr Beharry met Her Majesty again when he handed her a wreath during a Remembrance Service at Westminster Abbey.

The British Army sergeant, from the Caribbean country of Grenada, went on to star in television show Dancing On Ice in 2011.

Now he and his wife Mallissa are expecting their second child and, if it is a girl, she may be named Elizabeth.

The couple revealed the news at the christening of their three-year-old son, Ayden, at the Queen’s Chapel of the Savoy in central London.

Mr Beharry told Hello! Magazine that he liked the name Elizabeth because he has “a special relationship” with the Queen.

He added: “It is a name that means a lot to me.”

Mr Beharry said the couple do not yet know if the baby, due in May, will be a boy or a girl.

He also spoke of how he still suffers pain and flashbacks, more than a decade on from the attacks he faced in Iraq.

“There are trigger points, such as now, coming up to Remembrance Sunday” said Mr Beharry.

“Bonfire night is terrible, with fireworks. I lost my sense of smell when I was injured, but often I find myself gripped by this sensation that I’m being choked by smoke.”
