Security ‘under constant review’ as Christmas

CHRISTMAS market operators in Scotland are working with counter-terrorism police to keep security “under constant review” after the Berlin atrocity.

Police Scotland said there was no intelligen­ce suggesting a threat to any specific event, but said the risk to Scottish events was being “assessed against the impact of incidents which take place elsewhere, including Berlin”.

Organisers of Christmas events in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen said they were working with police to secure events and offered their sympathies to the families of those affected by the attack in Germany.

A spokesman for the Glasgow Christmas Market said organisers would operate a “vigilant security plan” in conjunctio­n with the Police and Glasgow City Council.

“The safety of our visitors and traders is always our priority and we have a quick response plan in place should anything unforeseen take place,” he said.

“We send our condolence­s to all those affected.”

Sadie Docherty, lord provost of Glasgow, said Glasgow would stand united with other cities “in condemning these attacks and grieving with Berlin”.

“On behalf of Glasgow’s citizens, our thoughts and condolence­s are with the people of Germany after this horrific attack,” she said. “What makes this incident so appalling is that everyone at the market was simply enjoying the festive season with friends and family, with no inkling of the senseless and atrocious actions that would follow.”

In the east of the country, Edinburgh’s Christmas said security plans were under constant review.
