Fresh delay in finishing repairs at Town House

-

A £4 MILLION project to repair Aberdeen’s dilapidated Town House has been delayed for a further three months after new structural defects were discovered.

The A-listed building, which was completed in 1874 and once played host to royalty, had fallen into disrepair with serious concerns about the stability of the roof and the clock tower, as well as water ingress and damp in the town and county hall.

The repairs were due to be completed in September but additional structural issues were discovered, including rotten wood in the building’s four towers and underneath the slates and lead which had to be replaced.

Further concerns emerged in September over loose granite masonry, but conservationists were hopeful the work could be completed by the end of the year.

Now Aberdeen City Council has revealed the project will not be completed until March.

The council’s chief executive Angela Scott said: “This project, like many restoration projects on a building this age, can be frustrating as new discoveries and issues are uncovered which lead to time delays and increasing costs.”
