Blaze-death police appeal to walker in combat clothing
POLICE marine search specialists have scoured ponds and woodland waterways close to the scene of a fire that killed a lawyer’s son as they appealed for help to trace a man wearing combat clothing.
Cameron Logan, 23, died in the blaze at his family home on New Year’s Day in Milngavie. His girlfriend, Rebecca Williams, 24, a radio journalist, is in intensive care at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.
Detectives said they are seeking a man dressed in army camouflage gear who is thought to have been walking on the West Highland Way around the time of the fire at Achray Place in Milngavie.
It is believed he routinely walks from Maryhill to the West Highland Way at Craigton Road, often passing through the Milngavie area, and officers hope that he may have information which could help the ongoing probe.
Detective Chief Inspector Paul Livingstone, of the Major Investigation Teams at Govan, thanked those who have already provided potential leads, and stressed that police were also still keen for any information relating to a dark-coloured car which was reportedly seen parked with its engine running in nearby Craigton Road around the time of the fire between 7.40am and 8.10am on Sunday.
It came as Ms Williams’ father said she is “fighting hard” but remains in a serious condition in hospital after she was rescued from the property where she had been staying with her boyfriend and his parents, who were treated for smoke inhalation.
Phillip Williams thanked well-wishers for their support on Facebook, adding: “No real change yet but I will try to put up news when I can. She’s fighting hard.”
Mr Logan, a psychology student, is the son of David Logan, corporate solicitor for the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.
A hospital spokesman said: “Rebecca’s condition remains serious but stable.”
Detectives say the “despicable” fire had been set deliberately.
Officers have also been carrying out door-to-door inquires, checking CCTV footage and interviewing people from the party which the couple attended.
Dog walkers and joggers have been urged to get in touch if they saw something unusual on Sunday morning.
