Fugitive is caught on return for Christmas

-

ONE of Britain’s most wanted fugitives who fled to Europe is back behind bars after being caught returning home to visit his family over Christmas.

Ahmed Omer, 46, absconded half way through his trial for drugs-trafficking offences at Nottingham Crown Court in November 2015.

He managed to flee to Holland and then Cyprus and was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in jail in his absence, but has been on the run ever since.

But Omer was snared by police 14 months later when he returned to the country to see his family in Basford, Notts, over the holiday period.

He appeared at Nottingham Crown Court via a video link and was jailed for four months after admitting breaching bail by absconding.

Sentencing, Judge Sarah Buckingham said: “You had no intention to surrender yourself when returning to this country.” GALLERY director Michael Corsar prepares to place a well-known image of children playing in the Gorbals after the old slums were pulled down in the 1960s before a new exhibition of renowned photographer Oscar Marzaroli’s work. Works by Marzaroli, who died in 1988, will be on show at Mr Corsar’s Roger Billcliffe gallery in Blythswood Street, Glasgow, from Thursday until the end of the month. Many of his works of children playing in the streets as the slums were replaced by high rises will be displayed. Other images include children playing football in front of a gas tower and Celtic’s win against Dunfermline in the 1965 Scottish Cup final at Hampden. Picture: Colin Mearns
