25 YEARS AGO Britain and its European partners yesterday recognised the republics of Slovenia and Croatia, and consigned the 74-year-old Yugoslav federation to the history books. The decision was taken by EC officials in Lisbon after a report by French Judge Robert Badinter. It evaluated the extent to which the republics have satisfied the requirements set out for recognition by Lord Carrington, chairman of the EC’s Yugoslav peace conference. 50 YEARS AGO Glasgow should appoint a director of art responsible for art galleries alone and another director responsible for the city’s museums, Dr T J Honeyman told the Glasgow Herald yesterday. Art galleries and museums are separate functions, he said, and each should be handled by an expert on the particular subject. He said Glasgow should take the chance to get away from the “small town thinking” that dictates art galleries and museums should always be linked. 100 YEARS AGO The varied attractions of Hengler’s Circus continue to draw enormous audiences. Last night the house was quite full, and every number on the programme had the largest measure of success. The sensation of the evening was The Cossack, with its war-like story, in picturesque setting, and its sensational “river of ice.” But The Cossack by no means exhausts the good things. There are several good turns with trained horses; the most agile of Japanese acrobats; a clever troupe of ponies and dogs; sea lions who motor and do other wonders. 150 YEARS AGO Theatre Royal – The Pantomime: Notwithstanding the severe frost and the attractions of the fine ice we have had on the neighbouring lochs for the last few days, the pantomime still continues to draw, night after night, large crowds of people. On Saturday afternoon last the management gave free access to the children belonging to the Industrial School, Rottenrow.
