Corbyn demands shift in wealth and power

-

JEREMY Corbyn will today accuse Theresa May and Nicola Sturgeon of taking an “unjust, unfair and immoral” approach to Britain’s economy, which he will argue is rigged in favour of the rich and against the poor.

Addressing the party’s economic conference in Glasgow, Mr Corbyn will make clear he wants to see a “fundamental shift of wealth and power” in the country and that only Labour stands against austerity in Scotland.

His speech comes as the latest YouGov opinion poll gave the Conservatives a 19-point lead over Labour, a rise of two points in a week.

The snapshot of 1,598 adults – the first to be taken after the Budget but before the full force of the National Insurance row took hold – puts the Tories on 44 points, up two, and Labour unchanged on 25. Both Ukip on 11 and the Liberal Democrats on 10 have dropped one point. The growing gap will renew pressure from some Conservative quarters on Mrs May to go for a snap General Election.

The 19-point lead is the largest the Tories have had since 2009 when Gordon Brown’s Government faced the aftermath of the financial crash. It is the biggest lead the Conservatives have had while in power since the days of Margaret Thatcher.

Today, Mr Corbyn is due again to attack the Prime Minister for displaying “utter complacency” in the Budget, stressing how Labour is calling for a systemic change in how the economy works.
