Whirlwind romance has lasted 70 years

-

A COUPLE who shocked their families by getting married just weeks after meeting are celebrating their 70th year together.

David and Kathleen Brown’s love is still going strong as they celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary on Sunday.

The Browns, of Sighthill, Edinburgh, said their secret to a happy marriage was working together through life’s good and bad times.

The great-grandparents first set eyes on each other at a Hogmanay party at a friend’s house as they celebrated entering the year 1947.

David was 22 and in the navy while Kathleen Gregson was 19 and worked at the Buttercup Dairy in Haymarket.

After only 10 weeks, the couple were married at Haymarket Registrar’s Office and enjoyed a small reception at the Chimes Hotel in Royal Terrace on March 12, 1947.

Mrs Brown, 89, admitted her mother did not think her relationship would last. She said: “She wasn’t very happy. I don’t think a lot of people thought it would last to be honest, but here we are, 70 years later.

“Our wedding was quite a small event. As it was postwar everyone was using coupons; nobody really had big dresses.

“It was a lovely day, I can still remember it clearly. All our family were there.

“We went on our honeymoon to Aberdeen and took the train. I remember we got stuck in Dundee for three hours though because the snow was really bad.”
