Nuclear protester ‘will not pay fine’
A PENSIONER who dived under a lorry thought to be carrying nuclear weapons has been fine – but insists he will not pay.
Brian Quail, 78, scrambled underneath an armoured personnel carrier as the convoy passed through Stirling on September 15 last year.
The incident happened on the A84 and lasted around 20 minutes, causing disruption to commuters.
Quail was forcibly removed from the scene by police officers and arrested. The retired classics teacher pleaded not guilty to causing a breach of the peace during the incident in September 2016.
But he was found guilty of the charge yesterday at Stirling’s Justice of the Peace Court and ordered to pay £200.
In a statement, released through the Scottish Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, Quail said: “I’m disappointed at the verdict. I’m more disappointed that the court has continued to ignore the manifest illegality of Trident.
“I won’t pay any fine imposed by a court that implies the legitimacy of Trident.”
Footage showed Quail and a CND colleague lying on the ground at a roundabout in Stirling.
Police were seen jumping off motorbikes and running over to the pair in an attempt to pull them away from the oncoming convoy.
The lorries had travelled from the Atomic Weapons Establishment Burghfield near Reading, Berkshire, on its way to Faslane.
