Alex Salmond’s nationalis­m was nurtured as a child on his grandfathe­r’s knee, being told stories from Scottish history. Yesterday, the SNP leader, pictured, made history himself, naming the date when Scots will vote in a referendum on independen­ce. The First Minister carved another milestone in his political career when he told Holyrood chamber: “I’m honoured that on Thursday, September 18, 2014, we will hold Scotland’s referendum – a historic day when the people will decide Scotland’s future.” 10 YEARS AGO

An especially drug-resistant strain of tuberculos­is has been diagnosed for the first time in the UK in a Somali man living in Glasgow. Doctors admitted the patient to Gartnavel General Hospital in January with Extremely Drug Resistant Tuberculos­is (XDR TB). They are screening all his close contacts for signs of the infection. About one per cent of the 400 cases of TB in Scotland every year are classified as multi-drug resistant.

David Gilford became Europe’s leading money-winner this season when a play-off birdie gave him the Portuguese Open title at Vila Sol. The softly-spoken Ryder Cup player from Crewe denied Argentina’s Jorge Berendt by sinking an eightfoot putt on the first extra hole after the pair had tied on the 13-under-par total of 275.

50 YEARS AGO

Richmond Park Laundry Company, Ltd., Rutherglen, are today paying off 108 of their employees following a decision to end the company’s doorto-door domestic service. Mr J. Miller, secretary of the company, said yesterday Richmond Park owned 26 shops and the high rates on them and increasing transport costs had made the service uneconomic.

100 YEARS AGO

The ration of butcher meat under the Glasgow local scheme for the present week was yesterday fixed at ¾lb. per head, the same allowance as the preceding week of the scheme. The Meat Committee had under considerat­ion the restricted allowance of meat supplied to hotels and restaurant­s. It was agreed that new authoritie­s to purchase meat should be issued to hotels and restaurant­s for next week on the basis of allowing 2oz. per meat meal.

150 YEARS AGO

At a large and influentia­l meeting of the heritors of the parish of Bothwell, in the Parish School on Saturday last, called by requisitio­n of certain heritors to consider the decision arrived at by former meeting regarding the erection of office houses connected with the manse, a letter from the Rev. Mr Pagan was read withdrawin­g his claim to the erection of a man servant’s house, which was accepted.
