5 YEARS AGO

Almost twice as many women, including tens of thousands of Scots, will lose out under plans to fast-track a £144-a-week flat-rate pension. About 720,000 females born between 1951 and 1953 will not be eligible for the new payments, even though men their age will, the House of Commons library found. About 400,000 would have missed out under the Coalition’s original plans. The change means around 70,000 women in Scotland will lose out.

The Prime Minister last night appeared determined to press ahead with tightening up the law on cannabis despite reports his official advisers are about to recommend against reclassifi­cation. A spokesman for Gordon Brown, pictured, spokesman downplayed suggestion­s the Advisory Committee on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) had concluded there was no need to re-classify cannabis from class C to class B. He pointed out the ACMD had yet to reach its conclusion.
