Make sure 602 is honoured

-

YOUR article on the centenary celebrations of the RAF (“War veteran launches baton relay to mark the RAF’S 100th birthday”, The Herald, March 31) highlights Glasgow’s own 602 Squadron and the part played during the Second World War and raises important issues. Various searches can find no direct reference to 602 that recognises this contribution within the centenary programme. This is despite the existence of a museum dedicated to 602 and a recent memorial erected in 2013 adjacent to the Art Galleries, which itself displays a Spitfire. The museum itself languishes within the Royal Highland Fusiliers museum on Sauchiehall Street and contains the very artifacts referred to your article. With little public access and with no alternative plans for the public to view this important history the future does not look promising.

Surely it is not beyond the City of Glasgow and the RAF to rectify this situation and truly recognise the part played in the history of the RAF by this illustrious fighter squadron in raising both the profile of 602 within the city and as part of the centenary programme.
