Cholesterol link to Alzheimer’s
CHOLESTEROL could cause dementia, scientists have warned.
Researchers have discovered how cholesterol, which is normally linked with heart disease, may also play an important role in the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.
An international team, led by Cambridge University researchers, found that in the brain, cholesterol acts as a catalyst that triggers the formation of the toxic clusters of the amyloid-beta protein, which is a key player in the development of Alzheimer’s.
They say that their findings are a big step towards a possible treatment for Alzheimer’s, which affects millions worldwide.
