WHERE THE PARTIES STAND

-

SNP

Press regulation is devolved, and Nicola Sturgeon has previously spoken out against Section 40. However, the SNP appears to be willing to lend its support to Section 40-type laws, as long as there are exemptions for regional (Scottish) titles. It has also supported Ed Miliband’s Leveson 2 call.

CONSERVATIVES

The Tory Government closed the Leveson Inquiry earlier this year, and said it would not push ahead with Section 40 laws that would have seen newspapers forced to pay both sides’ legal costs in court, win or lose. Culture Secretary Matt Hancock said Leveson’s demands had largely been met.

LABOUR

Labour’s deputy leader, Tom Watson, is behind an amendment to resurrect Section 40’s provisions, while its former UK leader Ed Miliband is spearheading an attempt to set up a second round of the Leveson inquiry.

LIBERAL DEMOCRATS Edinburgh West MP Christine Jardine, a former journalist, has backed calls for Leveson 2. Along with party leader Sir Vince Cable, she has also submitted her own amendment pushing for

Section 40-type rules.
