Isles’ sad lack of tourist advice
HAVING just returned from a trip to the Western Isles, your back-page article (“Business bid to boost tourism in Hebrides”, The Herald, May 7) interested me.
The tourist offices in Stornoway and Tarbert were most helpful, but the closed and empty offices in Lochmaddy, Lochboisdale and Castlebay were most disappointing.
An explanation that information was online now did not help the Dutch lady who wanted to know bus times to a site on South Uist or the German lady the modified time for the Leverburgh ferry.
Having a new marina at Lochboisdale and then walking up to the closed tourist office does not help our industry.
I would have thought that the first step to encourage tourism would be places were one could get first-hand information on local attractions.
Castlebay’s last remaining bank has been saved temporarily.
Could its tourist office not be reopened?
