Land deal brings urban quarter vision for Glasgow’s waterfront a step closer

-

CONSTRUCTION of a major new urban quarter on Glasgow’s waterfront is set to begin after the sale of land for the project was agreed.

The plan will see housing, offices, bars and restaurants built in the city’s Tradeston area, and there are hopes the scheme will generate thousands of jobs and billions of pounds for the local economy.

Work could get under way as soon as October after Glasgow City Council agreed to sell land to developers Drum Property Group for £1.3 million. Tom Turley, the city’s assistant executive director of development and regeneration services, said: “This is a once-in-ageneration opportunity to make a statement on Glasgow’s waterfront.”

The development will include two office blocks, one just over 500,000 sq ft, which is about two-and-ahalf times bigger than the new Scottishpower office in Glasgow’s St Vincent Street. The second will be smaller, at 210,000 sq ft.

Councillor Frank Docherty said: “I’ve sat in some committees and seen a lot of deals go through, but I’ve never seen a deal as big as this, not for a long time.

“I don’t know the exact number, but I’m told it could be as many as 10,000 jobs coming to Glasgow. This is a dream, multibillion pounds project that could be the biggest thing Scotland has had in a long time.

“Huge congratulations to Tom Turley and all of the team who have been working on this.”
